David Collins (1756-1810), Deputy Judge Advocate and Lieutenant-Governor of the new colony, wrote that English Colours were raised at Sydney Cove in 1788, one presumes that he knew the difference between the Union Flag and the English Flag; so why write 'English Colours'?

and where did it fly?

Seems that early artists depicted it flying from a staff on the Eastern side of Sydney Cove,
yet it seems that now the Western side is favoured.

One would think that if those that were there said Eastern then that would be considered good enough evidence.
