Why should we do that, when the people of Australia were denied this right in 2004 when marriage was unilaterally redefined by the Howard government without a plebiscite?

Because the matter at the moment is contentious, so why not ask the people what they really think.

You should get out more.

By the same standard, one would have to deny the right of marriage to anyone who would be labelled by someone else as "abnormal", including people with heights or weights outside the third standard deviation, the mentally retarded, anyone who is sterile, prisoners, the poor, the rich, people with very large noses or anyone else that does not conform to someone else's ideal of "normal". It's stupid and is unreasonable interference by the State into the private lives of consenting adults.

Incorrect. In the word "homosexual", homo = same, from ancient Greek. Other related words - homogenous, homologous.

No one is interfering in the lives of consenting adults, consenting adults can do anything legal in private, it's just that some people who want to be different don't like it when they are treated as different.

On 'homo' spot on, it's a wonder that Frogman didn't pick that up first :D :D

[Personal abuse deleted by moderator] Not allowing gay couples to marry is interfering in their lives. Its people like you that cause abominable shit like the gay panic defence to be still on the books.

Did you mean that allusion to sexual intercourse, literally or figuratively?

People don't choose to be homosexual any more than a heterosexual man chooses to prefer blondes, brunettes, redheads, fat, thin or whatever.

Right and some people who want to be different don't like it when they are treated as different.

Rather a specious argument coming from you Bam. Nobody has defined the issue as the pairing of "abnormal" people.

Who says that it is not a choice for some homosexuals or are you of the opinion that it is not a lifestyle that anyone would choose voluntarily?

No, I'm not of that opinion at all. But there is no evidence to suggest it's a "lifestyle choice" or anything similar.

Some homosexuals choose a heterosexual lifestyle so why not vice-versa?

Because there are - or in the past have been - some very great social and other pressures in this direction. There have been none in the other direction.

Doesn't mean to say that no one has chosen a homosexual lifestyle as a preference, you know, free will and all that.

Really this depends on what you define as "the homosexual lifestyle". Gay men and women don't all live on Oxford Street, Sydney and go to the Mardi Gras, for example. Lots of them think all that is a waste of time.
