Late last week we had an unusual event, a very large meteor over a populated area in southern Russia. (Technically it was a meteorite because pieces made it to the ground).

Imagine the scene. You're driving to work around dawn on a cold winter's day when suddenly a very bright light appears in the sky and lights up the surroundings as bright as the sun, and then there's an explosion in the sky. A few minutes later the shockwave hits. Buildings were damaged, a thousand people were injured by broken glass, other damage was reported.

More people were injured by this meteorite than have been known to be injured by all other meteorites through the whole of history combined. It's rare to be injured as a result of a falling meteorite.

Meanwhile, an asteroid about half the size of a football field has just passed by earth in the last couple of days. Interesting times!

It's disturbing to think what might have happened if this event had occured at the height of the cold war.

I think the man on the street would have been understandably up for a scare, but the military?

They would not have known that it was meteors/meteorites? Did they know this year because of some technology not around a couple of decades ago?

Things were on quite a bit more of a hair trigger back then.

The question is would they have cared?

Even today you have blokes like this in powerful positions.

Quote

In language echoing that of the Cold War, nationalist Russian lawmaker Vladimir Zhirinovsky, said: "Those were not meteorites, it was Americans testing their new weapons.

And let's not forget that this event took everyone by surprise.
