A few pieces of trivia about Australian borders.

We are familiar with the map of Australia. The shape of the borders of all states, Tasmania surrounded by water and so on. Yet the borders between the states and territories have some quirks that you probably didn't know about.

Some examples:

  • The shortest land border in Australia is an 85-metre border between Victoria and Tasmania, crossing Boundary Islet in Bass Strait.
  • Victoria has a short section of border with South Australia that runs along the Murray River. This section of border is undefined.
  • Western Australia has a 127-metre section of border that runs east-west.
  • Victoria has a longer border than Western Australia.

Victoria is not supposed to have a Murray River border with South Australia but acquired one due to an error when surveying the border in the 19th century. Because this short river border is not supposed to exist, the exact path of this border has never been defined.

The definition of the river section of the Victoria-NSW border is the southern bank of the Murray River (the technical definition is more precise). There's no technical definition for the Victoria-South Australia section - is it the south bank, the north bank or the middle of the river?
