Can someone explain to me why, if Australia is the best country at the present time and it's economy and lifestyle is the "best in the world" then why aren't the Europeans and Americans fleeing their failed countries in droves (like many others) on boats in order to attempt to live in Australia...."the best country in the world"?. It would make a lot of sense that if people are desperate in their countries they would attempt to flee it.....and where else would they come...... but...to the "best" would'nt they?

No explanation as yet. Have I written this in English or some other language? Or are you people illiterate? This is related as well to the controversy on budgets deficits/surpluses. Please confirm if you cannot understand it

From 1945 to 1960 probably over 1 million people arrived by boat from Europe. They did so using the accepted immigration channels. Probably the same number would like to come now as well but personal economic circumstances is not a sufficient ground for receiving immigration approval.

You see this is what I mean.....illiteracy. I am not talking about the immigration programs of the 50's and 60's which is totally irrelevant....why did you bring this up.....perhaps because you misunderstood the article?
I am talking about people who are desperate in their own countries because of dire consequences where they hop on a boat and try to settle in the "best country ever economically"....Australia. Isn't strange that this is not occuring

They do come...by aeroplane.

But being 'the best country' is in the eyes of the beholders.

If I were rich enough then I would live in India most of the time.

Any chance you are a fan of "the Best Exotic Marigold Hotel", Roderick?

Haven't seen it yet but from what I've read I think that I may well enjoy it.

My main interests in India are historical, both Indian history and family, one member of which (though not an ancestor) was a noted cavalry man and despatched, though not necessarily killed, a number of mounted Indian opponents when challenged to single combat with the sword.

One can live cheaply in India but at my age and with it the probable impending necessary medical attention is something that I could not afford.
There are doctors and hospitals there that are the equal of anywhere ih the world but extremely expensive; having said that, when I've had to see the local doctor, near where we stay in Mumbai, I've had the best of treatment.
This doctor however is a leading specialist in one of Mumbai's best private hospitals but he devotes two days a week (and sometimes more) to the patients in the district in which he grew up, furthermore he refues to accept anything more than the going rate for the locals which is about A$0.50 to $1.00 depending on the time taken. I doubt that he makes any profit at all as his staff also dispense medicines at a nominal cost. So we always take him a gift of a couple of bottles of good whisky when we go up there.

Much of this would have occurred when we still had a White Australia policy and the dictation test due to the Immigration Restriction Act 1901, the first act passed by the Australian Parliament and repealed in 1958. The dictation test was particularly heinous, being a way to block entry to anyone for any reason without actually appearing to do so. The controversial dictation test was a written test of at least fifty words in any European language, where failure would be sufficient grounds to deny entry.

Once again you are irrelevant! The whole of Europe and the USA....according to statistics is much worse economically than Australia. Australia even acknowledges this. This makes Australia....according to theory...the "best country in the world" to settle in. If people, as acknowledged, are suffering economically and socially in Europe and the USA and are desperate for a better life...why are they not, in desperation, hopping on boats....any old boats....in order to come to Australia? Now I am not going to write about this anymore....as you are either illiterate (cannot understand what I am writing)...or you are deliberately avoiding a response. Either way you shall never understand. Ignorance cannot be defeated
