....Compared with its actions in East Timor, the response of the Australian government to the Indonesian human rights abuses in West Papua is shameful (“West Papuans 'tortured, terrorised'”, October 7).
The sham plebiscite that followed the Indonesian invasion of the province in 1961 has been used to justify an unbroken history of native land theft, torture, terror, imprisonments and executions by the Indonesian invaders – all hidden behind a veil of secrecy.
To Tony Abbott, the Free Papua protesters in Bali were an unwelcome diplomatic embarrassment. For him, where there is money to be made and political points to be scored, then Indonesian human rights abuses can be conveniently ignored. Indeed, in an effort to gain favour with his hosts, Abbott has declared Australia's respect for Indonesian sovereignty and described the ramshackle empire of Indonesia as “indissoluble”.
The West Papuans cry out for justice, and Abbott ignores their cries, preferring instead to gain Indonesian cooperation in stopping the refugee boats and increasing Australia's live cattle exports to Indonesia. Didn't Abbott learn anything from the Jesuits about human rights and social justice?....
