New Premier secures maverick MP's support

Quote

New Victorian Premier Denis Napthine has shored up his slim parliamentary majority apparently winning back the vote of rebel MP Geoff Shaw, who resigned from the Liberal Party on Wednesday.

Dr Napthine says he had a brief phone conversation with the Frankston MP on Thursday night and does not believe he needs a written agreement with Mr Shaw.

But the Premier is confident of Mr Shaw's support on issues of supply and confidence.

Quote

In another dramatic turn of events on Spring Street, former premier Ted Baillieu's chief-of-staff, Tony Nutt, resigned from the Premier's office.

Mr Nutt, who will be investigated by the state's anti-corruption watchdog over secret tape recordings, says he does not want the issue to distract from the Government's work.

At least they didn't dump Balleiu when he was out of the country and tell him by phone, as the NT Libs apparently have. Brutal!

Hmm. "The Coalition are doomed"? Oh! Vic politics.

Without concession, does this bring you succour in these last days of the Gillardian experiment?

Good to see you've woken up. If you read the thread in full you'll find out why the Coalition Government is in trouble in Victoria.

Ryan's a political liability and should not be holding a portfolio. If he was a man of integrity, he would have resigned first.

The Nationals are full of dead wood, yet the Liberals have to choose from among them when assigning portfolios to keep the Coalition agreement. The Liberals must hold their noses while doing so.

Half of Victoria's TAFE board chairs sacked

Quote

Victoria's Skills Minister Peter Hall is refusing to detail his reasons for sacking half of Victoria's 14 TAFE board chairs.

The seven institutes affected include Holmesglen, Box Hill, GippsTAFE, South West TAFE, SuniTAFE and NMIT.

The Liberals' war on TAFE continues unabated!

More evidence of the underperformance of the Victorian government.

Ambulances facing big delays at hospitals

Quote

Unions fear lives could be put at risk as waiting times to transfer patients from ambulances to hospitals increase.

New data shows the time ambulances spend waiting outside hospitals, which is known as ramping, has almost doubled at 24 Victorian hospitals since 2010.

Police believed to have interviewed Geoff Shaw

Quote

Independent Frankton MP Geoff Shaw is believed to have been interviewed by police over the misuse of his parliamentary car.

Police say they spoke to a 45-year-old Frankston man on April 17 in relation to allegations of misconduct in the public office.

Once again, the Victorian Liberals demonstrate why the Coalition are obsessed with the price and have no understanding of the value.

$10m needed for legal aid to avoid court crisis

Quote

The Victorian Bar and the Law Institute of Victoria are calling for a significant increase in legal aid funding in the budget to address what they says is a growing crisis in the state's courts.

Reynah Tang, from the Law Institute of Victoria, says Victoria Legal Aid needs at least $10 million.

Fiona McLeod, SC, from the Victorian Bar, says an increasing number of cases are being halted because judges have no expectation of a fair hearing.

$10 million dollars is not a large sum of money given that the Victorian State budget runs to billions of dollars. Yet the Liberals see fit to starve essential services like Legal Aid so that they can squander the money elsewhere.

Every person held in remand who is unable to receive a fair trial due to a lack of funding for legal aid is a political prisoner in Victoria.

Today is when we see if the Liberal Victorian Government will see some reason under the new Premier and Treasurer or if they continue their conduct that shows why the Coalition are unfit to govern in Victoria. Today is the day the new Victorian Treasurer hands down his first state budget. We will find out if they see reason and restore the funding that they cut from Legal Aid, or if they continue starving Legal Aid so that they can keep looking after their mates at the top end of town.

Government-backed logging 'pushing rare possum towards extinction'

Quote

Australia’s leading scientific expert on the endangered Leadbeater’s possum has publicly lambasted the Victorian state government, claiming it is the first ever domestic administration to take “calculated actions” that it knew could wipe out a threatened species.

In a letter published in the respected journal Science, Prof David Lindenmayer, of the Australian National University, states that “government-sanctioned legal logging of the reserve system will significantly increase the chance of extinction of Leadbeater’s possum”.

The letter, co-authored by Hugh Possingham, of the University of Queensland, claims that a “substantial watering down” of logging industry regulations has led to a drastic loss of the Leadbeater’s possum’s natural habitat.

Victorian Independent MP Geoff Shaw will be back in Parliament today after being charged over the alleged misuse of his taxpayer-funded car.

Whoa, hang on!

Shouldn't Napthine be calling for him to resign from Parliament?

Oh, apparently not - the shoe's on the other foot now..

Quote

Opposition Leader Daniel Andrews says the premier needs to say whether he will continue to rely on Mr Shaw's vote.

"It is because of him and only him that Denis Napthine is the premier of our great state," he said.

It's a pretty clear principle established by the Libs everywhere: if one of theirs has any issues raised, they should resign. If one of ours is charged or called a liar from the bench, no problem.

I guess knocking an elderly man arse over head doesn't qualify the offender as "tainted" when it comes to the Vic Libs?

Gee, it doesn't pay to support demos in Victoria.

The response from the right on my blog has been quite eye-opening. They never give their real names and invariably threaten some kind of reprisal. In other words, they replicate the police in their view that there is a god-given right to violence against those who disagree or dissent. I’ll come back to that, including death threats, in a minute. Here is what one of the commenters said. (Excuse the language the commenter uses, but it helps make the point about the unsuitability of police to police anyone.)

Never let the truth get in the way of a good story hey cockhead?

A Whois check of the 203.25.230.151 address reveals it is from the Victoria Police Centre at 637 Flinders Street, Melbourne.

So that means Victoria Police, during work time, feel free to use government resources to display their hatred of protesters in the most foul and misogynistic way.
