I'm intrigued to know how it works.

As far as I can tell, when someone clicks the green button on any given post, it's a vote of approval for that post. But as it appears only on that post, I guess it's not necessarily a vote of approval for the author.

No doubt if I've got it wrong someone more knowledgable will come along and set us straight.

It actually keeps track of your overall reputation based on the number of votes you have in total. I need to implement a few things to do with reputation, but basically in future we will have a sort of badge system, where posters with lots of reputation will be commended and recognised as valued contributors.

Suggestions in this area are welcome :)

Actually, you can see your reputation on your profile page under your photo. There is also a new tab that shows you who has given you reputation votes.

You don't reckon that would cheapen the system, JJ?

I mean, there could be a spot of mutual backslapping, that sort of thing.

Hmm.. hadn't really thought about that. You could be right. Let's see how it goes.. it's nice to see what you get rep for though, don't you think? Perhaps it would be better if it didn't show who gave you rep, just which posts you got rep for. Thoughts?

I don't know whether this 'reputation' system is a wise idea. When people start aiming for a reputation they start behaving like politicians, they'll only say what people want then to hear, or they will only post what they perceive people/posters are attracted to. When this occurs it is usual for posters to fall into a trap of avoiding what they really want to post about. I have never aimed at looking like a "mister goody two shoes". I have been posting on the internet since 1999 and I have never defamed or libelled anyone. However I have never avoided in "telling it like it is". However I am not against a new idea from being trialled either

I think it can work ok Dumbcluck, but I'd prefer it to be anonymous.

I'm sort of uncomfortable with the idea of giving a rep now in case it's perceived as a bit of a suck-up.

I'm also uncomfortable with calling someone Dumbcluck, lol.

I haven't given the anonymity any consideration but I think with the diverse range of people on these forums, I think DumbCluck's concerns are moot.

Don't worry about it..I just got sick of Betenoire that's all. I have been using Dumbcluck since I joined those American forums way back in 1999. I wanted an unusual user name...and believe it or not it took me quite some time to get one (over an hour)...it came up "already in use" many times. So I said to myself "look there are too many narcissists out there I'd have to find a user name which sort of 'denigrates' me and in the same time it's a tongue in cheek user name (which of course due to their narcissism they'll never use) and I came up with "dumbcluck"...and lo and behold..it came up "okay"
