Yesterday, as if all Australians didn't know it, was Melbourne Cup Day; the Day when Australians, except for a fortunate few, watch or listens to the Cup.

I don't and haven't seen/heard the race for about thirty years; I make a point of not being in anyway involved.

Roderick: Mark Twain thought it the authentic Australian national holiday. The only real Australian heroes are Ned Kelly,an outlaw and Carbine and Phar Lap, horses. ( I am quoting Brian Fitzpatrick).

Samuel was dead by the time of WW I so he can be excused; he's still on the ball though with Ned.
